Today where we can find many talented persons not only in the field of studies and sports, performing arts have also become a major area where one can build their career. As we can see today many youths are inclined towards western instruments like guitar, drum set, keyboard etc. and few have excelled so far. We can hardly see any youths from our state keen and interested in musical instruments like flute, tabala, sitar etc. which is a major backbone of the Indian classical music as well as Nepali music.
Today we have come across one exceptionally talented musician who is an outstanding flute player. Where one tries to rock the crowds by their guitar, throwing in some riffs, Bhim Gurung mesmerizes the crowd with his pipe and also can be said to be one of the Pied Piper in Sikkim. Bhim Gurung hailing from a remote village in West Sikkim, called Labdang after his high school went for a diploma course of 9 month in flute playing from Guru Sishya Parampara Institute in Kolkota. Interested in playing keyboard and drums in his school days, automatically switched his interest in flute after seeing a person playing, who happened to be a school teacher in a village few miles away from his and also a teacher in Ujjwal Kala Kendra Deorali. The person, Pramod Rai, after selection took along with him few students interested in playing both flute and maadal. Having played in almost all the major cities of India and has also played with renowned artist like Junu Rijal, Ram Chandra Kafley is nowadays working as a music teacher in Pakyong Government School under one of the scheme of the SSA.
“There are very few flute players in Sikkim whom I can count in my fingers. As far as I am concerned there are only 3 flute players including me, namely Dawa Tamang, Suren Subba. One of the best compliments came from one of the best flute player from Darjeeling, Mr. Gopal Subba, who told me that with a talent like you, we don’t have to come for recording in Sikkim, but you have to work hard in order to achieve this. He has also invited me to learn under him.

. But still my thirst for learning hasn’t stopped. I want to learn more and more of it. But there is no institute in Sikkim where I can pursue my further studies in flute. We have to go to Kolkota or Guwahati or Benaras. It would be great if we have access to one in Sikkim itself,” adds Mr. Bhim. In love with his flute, has also done a recording with All India Radio. Furthermore he adds that “I have a plan to start my own institute in future has a dream to perform with renowned Indian flute Player, Shri. Hari Prasad Chaurasiya, and seek blessings from him and also play flute for an artist from Nepal, Kunti Moktan, whom I think is the most melodious singer I have ever heard”.
