GANGTOK RUNS FOR A CAUSE

By Kesang Tamang: By resolution 42/112 of December 1987, the General Assembly of United Nation Organisation decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

In Gangtok also the International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit trafficking was observed jointly by Gangtok based NGO, RUN (Recovering Users Network), along with Jagrity Rehabilitation Centre Sichey, Drishya Rehabilitation Centre Aho Pakyong and SNP+ STNM Hospital Complex on the Theme “ LIFE DOES NOT REWIND “ at Gangtok M.G.Marg on 26th June 2011. The entire event was also supported by Sikkim State AIDS Control Society (SSACS) and Sikkim Police. On the very occasion marathon race was also organized which started from Tourist Information Centre- via – O Point, Secretariat, Tibet Road and back to Tourist Information Centre. People from different age groups, Students from different schools, Volunteers from different NGOs participated in the Marathon. Dance by different dance groups was also showcased during the event giving a clear message to society on use of drugs and its consequences.

The event also witnessed different bodybuilders showcasing their strength and power by bench pressing and making youth aware of the drugs and its ill effects.
In spite of heavy rainfall that started from the beginning of the race, it could not deter the enthusiastic from running for a CAUSE.
